President of the British Academy to Speak at Inaugural Lindner LectureOnora O'Neill will present free public lecture on Monday, April 28, at The College of Wooster
WOOSTER, Ohio - Onora O'Neill, president of the British Academy, will present "Naturalism, Normativity, and Applied Philosophy" at the inaugural Lindner Lecture on Monday, April 28, at The College of Wooster. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7:30 p.m. in Room 105 of Scovel Hall (944 College Mall). A dessert reception will precede the presentation. O'Neill has been President of the British Academy since 2005. She was elected a Fellow in 1993, and writes on the topic of ethics and political philosophy, with particular interests in questions of international justice, in the philosophy of Immanuel Kant, and in bioethics. Her books include Faces of Hunger: An Essay on Poverty, Development and Justice (1986), Constructions of Reason: Exploration of Kant's Practical Philosophy (1989), Towards Justice and Virtue (1996), Bounds of Justice (2000), Autonomy and Trust in Bioethics (2002), A Question of Trust (the 2002 Reith Lectures) and most recently Rethinking Informed Consent in Bioethics (2007), written jointly with Neil Manson. O'Neill chairs the Nuffield Foundation and is a professor of philosophy at the University of Cambridge. She has been a member of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics and the Human Genetics Advisory Commission, and was closely involved in work on a number of reports on bio-medical issues. She was formerly Principal of Newnham College, Cambridge, and was created a Life Peer in 1999 (Baroness O'Neill of Bengarve). In addition, she sits as a crossbencher, and has served on House of Lords Select Committees on Stem Cell Research and BBC Charter Review. The talk by O'Neill is sponsored by The Lindner Lecture in Ethics Endowed Fund, which was established in 2007 by Carl H. Lindner of Cincinnati.
