WOOSTER, Ohio - Lauren Schreur, a senior political science and philosophy double major at The College of Wooster and a resident of Grand Rapids, Mich., has been chosen to receive the 2007 David L. Carpenter Pre-Law Prize. The $5,000 award is presented to Wooster's top pre-law student.

In order to be considered, the student must have an exemplary record of academic achievement, significant participation in Wooster's Pre-Law Advising Program, experience as a student leader, and a commitment to personal honesty and integrity. The student must also have been admitted to an accredited U.S. law school.

Schreur, who will be attending Boston College School of Law next fall, was a captain and a top performer with Wooster's Moot Court Team, and was the starting second baseman on Wooster's varsity softball team. She was also a Teaching Assistant for the course "Theory and Practice of Law," vice president of Pi Sigma Alpha political science honor society, and a member of Phi Sigma Tau philosophy honor society. In addition, she was a department assistant in political science, and she received honors on her Senior Independent Study project, titled "Wisconsin v. Yoder: Pluralism, Autonomy, Identity, and the Hidden Values Behind the Liberal Paradigm."

"The Carpenter Prize is a great opportunity to recognize students who have excelled in both academic and non-academic areas while at Wooster," said Henry Kreuzman, associate professor of philosophy and chair of Wooster's Pre-Law Advising Program. "Lauren embodies the core principles of the prize. Not only is she an outstanding student and a campus leader, but she also has a deep interest in justice. "

"I'm really grateful for all the professors who have encouraged my passion for the law and helped me develop the strong writing and critical-thinking skills necessary to succeed in law school," said Schreur. "Being involved in the pre-law program, specifically the Moot Court team, was such an important aspect of my time at Wooster. Those involved in the pre-law program, especially my fellow students, provided me invaluable support during the law-school application process, while Moot Court gave me the opportunity to apply and test my knowledge of the law. I am confident that my academic and extracurricular experiences at Wooster have provided me with all of the tools necessary to succeed in law school next year."

Established by the Figgie Family Foundation in 1999, the Carpenter Prize commemorates the life of the late David Lyle Carpenter, a 1965 Wooster alumnus who became a leading tax and corporate lawyer and a partner in the Cleveland law firm of Calfee, Halter & Griswold L.L.P. Prior to his death in 1999, Carpenter was recognized by Best Lawyers in America for excellence in the category of corporate law. He was also an active member of the Heights Christian Church and served on the board of the National Conference for Community and Justice. At Wooster, he won departmental honors in economics and lettered in track and field. He later attended the University of Michigan, where he earned both an M.B.A. and a J.D.
