College of Wooster hosts Symposium on Global Climate Change

WOOSTER, Ohio - The College of Wooster will host "Global Climate Change," a semester-long symposium focusing on the environment, this spring. The series will feature four lectures, an accompanying art exhibition, and an Earth Day Eve celebration. Admission to all events is free and open to the public.

The first lecture will be Wednesday, Feb. 7, when William Ruddiman, professor emeritus of environmental sciences at the University of Virginia, presents "Farmers First Altered Climate Thousands of Years Ago" at 7:30 p.m. in Lean Lecture Room of Wishart Hall (303 E. University St.).

The second lecture will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 20, when Richard Alley, the Evan Pugh Professor of Geosciences at Penn State University, looks at "Possibilities in Problems: The Good Side of Global Warming" at the 26th Annual Richard G. Osgood, Jr., Memorial Lecture at 7 p.m. in McGaw Chapel (340 E. University St.).

The series will continue on Wednesday, April 11, when Mark Sagoff from the University of Maryland's School of Public Policy addresses "Climate Change: Ethics vs Economics" at 7:30 p.m. in Lean Lecture Room of Wishart Hall.

The final lecture will be Monday, April 16, when Curtis Runnels, professor of archaeology at Boston University, discusses "Environmental Degradation in Ancient Greece and the Myth of a Golden Age" at 7:30 p.m. in Lean Lecture Room of Wishart Hall.

The Earth Day Eve gathering will be held on Friday, April 20, on the rear patio of Lowry Center (1189 Beall Ave.) with an open potluck featuring vegan, organic, and international dishes and entertainment, beginning at 5 p.m. The art exhibition, titled "Global Anxieties: Nine Perspectives on a Changing Planet" will run from March 27 through May 13, in the Sussel Gallery and Burton D. Morgan Gallery of The College of Wooster Art Museum (1220 Beall Ave.).
