WOOSTER, Ohio - R. Stanton Hales, president of The College of Wooster, has been named to the Board of Trustees of the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AACU).
Hales, who became Wooster's 10th president in 1996, is also serving this year as president of the North Coast Athletic Conference. In addition, he is a member of the board of directors of the Association of Presbyterian Colleges and Universities and is on the executive committee of both the Great Lakes Colleges Association and the Annapolis Group of colleges.
The AACU is the leading national association devoted to the advancing and strengthening of liberal learning for all students, regardless of academic specialization or intended career. Since its founding in 1915, the organization's membership has grown to nearly 700 accredited public and private colleges and universities of every type and size.
AACU functions as a catalyst and facilitator, forging links among presidents, administrators, and faculty members who are engaged in institutional and curricular planning. Its mission is to reinforce the collective commitment to liberal education at both the national and local level and to help individual institutions keep the quality of student learning at the core of their work as they evolve to meet new economic and social changes.
Prior to becoming Wooster's president, Hales served as vice president for academic affairs at the College for five years. He is a graduate of Pomona College and holds master's and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics from Harvard University.
