WOOSTER, Ohio - College of Wooster alumni will spread their volunteer spirit across the country on Saturday, Oct. 3, as graduates gather in 28 cities for the ninth annual Scots in Service Day. An estimated 1,000 alumni, including more than 125 local grads, will participate in projects to help their local communities.
"Scots in Service reflects the passion of our alumni to participate in volunteer projects that benefit the residents of the cities where they live," said Sharon Rice, assistant director of alumni relations at Wooster. "Every year alumni tell us how much they appreciate the opportunity to be involved in the project and how proud they are of the College's continued commitment to
volunteer service."
One of the newest cities to join the nationwide project is Toledo, where alumni and friends will serve meals at Cherry Street Mission Ministries Good Samaritan Outreach Center while providing donations of food, clothing, and household items. Elsewhere in Ohio, projects ranging from trimming and weeding to mulching and planting will take place in Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and
Dayton, while in Wooster, eight separate projects are planned, including work
at the Viola Startzman Free Clinic just north of campus.
On the East Coast, alumni will volunteer in Boston, Baltimore, Richmond, Raleigh-Durham, and Washington, D.C. Out West, Wooster grads will provide service in Denver, Portland, and San Francisco. Down South, projects are scheduled for Atlanta, Houston, Jacksonville, and, for the first time, Tampa, where invasive species will be removed and trails and boardwalks refurbished at the Museum of Science and Industry in an effort to provide a better educational experience for members of the community. In the heartland, alumni will be in Chicago and St. Louis, as well as Nashville, where alumni will meet for the first time to partner with Hands on Nashville to provide "mini-makeovers" at area schools by painting, landscaping, cleaning, and organizing educational spaces. Rounding out the list of participating cities are Detroit, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Rochester, and New York City/ New Jersey as well as a return trip across the Atlantic to London.
