WOOSTER, Ohio - The College of Wooster's Department of Theatre and Dance was well represented at the Region II Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, which was held last week (Jan. 12-17) in Indiana, Pa.
The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) is a national theatre program involving 18,000 students from colleges and universities across the country. It has served as a catalyst for improving the quality of college theatre in the United States, and has grown into a network of more than 600 academic institutions, where theatre departments and student artists showcase their work and receive outside assessment by KCACTF respondents.
Individually for Wooster, first-year student Malcolm Campbell-Taylor placed among the top 32
participants in the semi-final round of the Irene Ryan Scholarship Competition from a field of more than 200 entries. His acting partner was Jasmine Verreen, also a first-year student. In addition, senior Alexander Paolino-Gibson placed as a finalist in the top five among 17 stage-management entries.
All of the students who attended also participated in the New Play Program, a venue of competition for student playwrights. Campbell-Taylor and Verreen, along with senior Laura Vandiver, auditioned for and acted in the New Plays. In addition, Paolino-Gibson stage-managed for the program.
Season Ellison, visiting assistant professor of theatre at Wooster, received a Certificate of Merit for her direction of the new play, "Orphan Train," which was a regional winner and will advance to the Kennedy Center for the national competition in April. Two other Certificates of Merit were also awarded to members of Wooster's Department of Theatre and Dance: Professor Dale Seeds was recognized for his scenic design of "The Comedy of Errors," and technical director Jody Tidwell was recognized for her lighting design of "The Comedy of Errors."
