WOOSTER, Ohio — Officers of the Student Government Association (SGA) at The College of Wooster will be answering questions about the organization, sharing the history of SGA, and providing information about the upcoming SGA elections in January at an open session on Tuesday, Dec. 7, from 6-7 p.m. in Lowry Center. Refreshments will be served.

The organization, which serves as the governing body for undergraduates and works to improve the quality of student life at Wooster, consists of eight elected cabinet members and 12 elected senators.

“SGA is a resource for students to implement change on campus," said President Abbey Smanik. "The goal of this event is to raise awareness about SGA and to encourage students to consider running for office in the upcoming elections.”

In order to become more visible, SGA has launched several initiatives, including a recent project that provided funding to tune pianos in five residence halls. The group also represents the student body in meetings with the College’s Trustees; works with Campus Council, the Wooster Ethic Committee, and the Office of Residence Life to increase awareness about vandalism and littering on campus; consults  with Dining Services to review off-campus catering policies; and offers summer storage for student belongings. In addition, the organization provides suggestions to Campus Council regarding student organization budgets; provides transportation service to and from regional airports before and after breaks; and co-sponsors a range of events across campus. The group has also provided shuttle service to Wooster’s north end and downtown areas so that students can shop and attend community events.

“We want students to come to us with questions, concerns, and other needs,” said Smanik. “We want them to know that we are here as a place for their voices to be heard.”
