Cleveland’s Yiddishe Cup to Perform at The College of Wooster on Nov. 17

Dance concert to be held from 9:30-11:30 p.m. in Lowry Center Ballroom

WOOSTER, Ohio — Yiddishe Cup, the spirited klezmer band from Cleveland, will present a dance concert at The College of Wooster on Saturday, Nov. 17. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the ballroom of Lowry Center (189 Beall Ave.) from 9:30-11:30 p.m.

Formed in 1988, Yiddishe Cup is one of the top klezmer bands in the country. The group has played at festivals, colleges, and Jewish gatherings across the United States. Known for its raucous humor and its ability to light up the stage with top-notch musicianship, Yiddishe Cup encompasses everything from traditional to swing to mambo.

Klezmer music is a hybrid of Eastern European Jewish folk music, American swing, Yiddish theater tunes, and Israeli horas. The Evening Post of Wellington, New Zealand, describes the music as “a delicious concoction that sounds like jazz but with 11 secret herbs and spices added.” Winners of the Cleveland Free Times “Best Ethnic/World Act of 2002” award, the band is highly regarded for its eclectic mix of Jewish music, with an emphasis on traditional klezmer and Borscht Belt Humor. The band’s first album, Klezmerized, is described as ”a perfect introduction to klezmer.” A subsequent release, Yiddfellas, provided an in-depth follow-up.
