WOOSTER, Ohio — Archaeology Day at The College of Wooster promises to be a hands-on event again this year with opportunities for children of all ages. The event, which coincides with National Archaeology Day, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Most activities will take place in the lobby of Lowry Center (1189 Beall Ave.). Events include demonstrations of flint knapping (the technique used by ancient Indians to make stone tools), and the use of a transit for taking measurements and elevations. In addition, artifacts from sites in Ohio and Jordan will be on display, along with casts of fossil humans that depict the origin and evolution of our species.

Visitors will also be able to compare the pelvis of a gorilla to that of a human to see what makes us able to walk upright. A simulated excavation will be set up where young children can find artifacts. Other activities for children will be piecing together broken pots, and “cave painting” on cardboard walls. There will be informational booths about the work of the Wayne County Cemetery Preservation Society and the Wayne County Historical Society.

Another highlight will be an appearance by Olivia Navarro-Farr, assistant professor of sociology and anthropology, who will talk about her discovery this past summer of the tomb of a Mayan queen in Guatemala. Also, books and magazines about archaeology will be on sale. Parking will be available in the lots next to Ebert Art Center (1220 Beall Ave.), and behind Taylor Hall and Freedlander Theater (both accessible from Bever St.).

Archaeology Day is sponsored by the Archaeology Program and the Archaeology Student Colloquium at The College of Wooster. National Archaeology Day is sponsored by the Archaeological Institute of America (publisher of Archaeology magazine), the Society for American Archaeology, and the Ohio Archaeological Council.

Additional information is available by phone (330-263-2474) or e-mail.
