Wooster Jazz Ensembles Concert Friday, April 22

The College of Wooster’s Jazz Ensemble and combos will present a concert Friday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m. in Freedlander Theatre (329 E. University St.) on the campus of The College of Wooster.

Under the direction of Wooster faculty members Jeffrey Lindberg and Greg Slawson, the groups will play well-loved tunes by Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Freddie Hubbard, Billy Strayhorn, and George and Ira Gershwin,   

Featured soloist is internationally acclaimed jazz double bassist, Rodney Whitaker. Beginning his career as bassist with the Wynton Marsalis Septet, he went on to play with more of the world’s greats, including Mulgrew Miller, Kathleen Battle, Chick Corea, and the late Dizzy Gillespie. Whitaker developed jazz studies at Michigan State University, where he serves as the program’s director.  

Also soloing is vocalist Thea Kwan, a junior at The College of Wooster, who regularly performs with the College’s jazz ensembles. She will sing the Gershwin brothers’ “Soon.”
