Pianist Michael Kocour to Perform with Wooster Jazz Ensemble
Concert Saturday, Nov. 4, will also feature the Jazz Combo at The College of Wooster
WOOSTER – Michael Kocour, jazz pianist, organist, and composer, will perform with The College of Wooster's Jazz Ensemble, directed by Jeffrey Lindberg, on Saturday, November 4, at 7:30 p.m., in Freedlander Theatre (329 E. University St.). The Jazz Combo, directed by Lindberg and Greg Slawson will also perfom.
The concert will feature the music of Oscar Peterson, Nelson Riddle, Nat King Cole, and Herbie Hancock.
Kocour has performed at venues around the world and has been a guest on Marian McPartland's internationally syndicated NPR program "Piano Jazz." She praised Kocour as "a brilliant pianist and composer. He plays with remarkable creativity and a technique to die for. Sparkling ideas fly from his fingers making harmonic sophistication the order of the day." The Chicago Tribune hailed Kocour as "one of the most sophisticated pianists in jazz."
Kocour is a professor in the school of music at Arizona State University where he also serves as director of jazz studies. His recorded work has appeared in two major motion pictures and numerous television commercials. He has released five critically acclaimed albums.
Lindberg, professor of music at Wooster, is also the director of the highly acclaimed Chicago Jazz Orchestra, Chicago's oldest professional jazz orchestra in continuous operation. Slawson is a jazz piano instructor at Wooster.
