Discovering Life Goals: Adel El-Adawy (Egypt)
I spent three months traveling around my own country and learning new things. . . . It has been an enlightening process; realizing the opportunities that stood in front of me and see that these opportunities were unfamiliar to ordinary Egyptians. Of course, I learned some new facts about my country doing research for the program, but what really struck me was the fact to hear stories about Egypt I had never heard before. . .
Throughout the year, talking about the issues that I had researched in the summer, made me open my eyes. I felt at the end of the year, that I was indeed a very privileged Egyptian for being able to study in the United States. It is an opportunity few Egyptians even dream about. . .
Having realized this through the Ambassadors Program, it has changed my perspective in live and life goals. I believe I will never be able to build a thorough happiness in life, when I know that my own people are suffering or do not have the opportunities that I have had. It does not matter who I am or where I end up in life, what matters is what I do. I think this kind of mindset has been shaped by my experiences in the program. I really want in the future to change the current situation in Egypt and be part of the leadership that could achieve that.
. . . [this] is what I believe is the most important thing I have learned from the research and the program. I believe that in other places, I would have maybe never learned of the privileges I enjoy and would have never build a mindset as the one I have right now. I will always be thankful for the program for this opportunity.
