Job Description

The Director of Residence Life is a member of the Residence Life Leadership Team. Reporting directly to the Associate Dean of Students, the Director works with the Associate Dean to provide visionary leadership, direction, and oversight for all aspects of the Residence Life program at this private, residential, liberal arts college. The Director role is a live in professional staff member who is expected to be dynamically engaged with all aspects of campus and student life. With focus on a residential campus, the Residence Life program complements and supports the academic mission of the College which includes a historic commitment to international and domestic minority students. The Residence Life staff is highly engaged in campus initiatives and often provides leadership in student centered events. The Director of Residence Life is directly responsible for the housing processes. Experience with housing operations is crucial to the success of this role.

Responsibilities

Supervision

  • Provides leadership for daily operations of a 2000 plus bed residential program and its’ professional and student staff.
  • Selects, trains, supervises, and encourages developmental opportunities for the Assistant Director (directly) and professional Area Directors and other staff who may have Residence Life Collateral Assignments (indirectly). 
  • Responsible for programming, budgeting, space allocation and housing of students.
  • Communicates with students, parents, administrators, faculty, alumni, vendors, etc. 
  • Acts as liaison with Physical Plant Services regarding residence halls maintenance and capital improvements. 
  • Directly manages the Independent Student Housing Option

Management 

  • Facilitates all housing processes including the First Year Assignment Process which utilizes the Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator. 
  • Coordinates daily administrative tasks for the department. 
  • Participates in the on-call schedule for campus. 
  • Facilitates educational interventions and promotes community standards. 
  • Implements community building initiatives on departmental and, at times, campus wide levels. 
  • Participates in campus wide academic and programmatic initiatives. 
  • Adjudicates level II judicial matters and is closely involved in student disciplinary matters.

Generalist

  • Collaborates with various academic offices, physical plant staff, and Student Life colleagues.
  • Participates, as appropriate, in College-wide committees.
  • Assumes other responsibilities as assigned within the broader Student Affairs division.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree plus substantial and progressive experience supervising various residential life and/or housing programs; or equivalent work and education experience; experience in housing operations and construction/renovation projects is desirable.
  • Experience in program development, personal counseling, crisis intervention and staff supervision are crucial. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a variety of individuals is essential.
  • Experience and commitment to working with international, African-American, and other multi-ethnic communities essential. 
  • Must be highly motivated, energetic and ready to assume the responsibility for a comprehensive program; must be imaginative and creative; able to promote and motivate high enthusiasm for residence life program. 
  • An appreciation for the relationship between the academic and residence life programs at a private liberal arts institution is essential. 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal; strong organizational skills; the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines; and be computer literate.
