Name: Marianne Sierocinski
Hometown: Davie, FL/Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Class Year: 2011
Major/Minor: Political Science and Anthropology (double major)
Extracurricular Activities: I am currently serving as President of Circle K for the 2008-2009 year, and I am very excited since our club is lucky to have a great group of officers for this upcoming year. We offer opportunities to volunteer at Lincoln Way Elementary, the Humane Society, Sunrise Assisted Living, the Gault Family Learning Center, and other local organizations in the Wooster community. And I am especially looking forward to implementing a lot of new ideas in the fall! I also really enjoy dancing and try to make it to lessons provided by the Let’s Dance Society as often as I can.
Favorite Free Time Activity: A few of my friends and I are really into thrifting/antiquing, so I love going to downtown Wooster during the weekend as well; I’ve especially enjoyed attending the Don’t Throw Shoes (improve comedy) shows and the performances by the a cappella groups on campus.
Favorite Lowry Food: stir-fry or calzone, although the quesadillas in Kittredge are good, too!
Advice for Incoming First-Year Students: Don’t be afraid to try new things! You have a once in a lifetime opportunity to recreate yourself when you come to the college. Last year during orientation we were told over and over to “step outside of our comfort zone.” Doing this has made a world of difference for my first year. Whether it’s getting the courage to randomly introduce yourself to the person next to you in class, or trying Scottish Dance even though you’ve never danced before in your life, or getting involved with an issue that always mean a lot to you even though you don’t know anyone else in the group…DO IT! And also, the first semester can be a tough time of transition. It was definitely harder for me than I expected it would be, but I got over everything and absolutely love it here because I wasn’t afraid to ask for help. The Writing Center, Wellness Center, Learning Center, Center for Academic Advising, and plenty of other resources are her at the college to ensure that you succeed!
Favorite Wooster Memory: One of my fondest memories here at Wooster so far has been performing in the International Culture Show last fall. Ten of us from Let’s Dance performed a short tango piece – and we were awesome! I hadn’t been on a stage in years, and I was incredibly proud of myself for being brave enough to participate.
