DATA FILES
A README FILE accompanies the ethnic fractionalization data used in the above article. A data file is included in ETHFRAC.ZIP, enclosed. Each are in EXCEL format.

VARIABLE NAMES
Below are the variable names used in the data set, along with a BRIEF description of the variable. Also listed, whenever necessary, is the source of the data. More detail can be found in the accompanying paper.

VARIABLES:
CCODE - Country Code - SOURCE: Singer and Small (1994)
CNTRYEAR - [CCODE * 10000] + YEAR
COUNTRY - Country Name - SOURCE: Singer and Small (1994)
ETHKRAIN - New Ethnic Fractionalization Score - SOURCE: Krain (1997)
ETHTAYLR - Old Ethnic Fractionalization Score - SOURCE: Taylor and Hudson (1972)
YEAR - Year

MEASUREMENT OF ETHNIC FRACTIONALIZATION VARIABLE
Taylor and Hudson (1972) have only one value per country for what is really an ethno-linguistic fractionalization variable, coded as that value for all the years for that country when used. For example, if Switzerland's value was 0.55 in the year in which Taylor and Hudson coded it, then that value would be Switzerland's value throughout the data set. Krain (1997) improved the accuracy of this variable slightly by recoding the variable as strictly an ethnic fractionalization variable (see paper for details) and by coding it at four years in the study, each separated by a decade: 1948, 1958, 1968, 1978.
