These courses should include an exploration of biology and biological principles, such as  cell structure and function, reproduction and development of plants and animals, bioenergetics, genetics, and evolution, diversity in structure, function, behavior, and ecology.

TWO SEMESTERS

TWO QUARTERS

MICROBIOLOGY+ This course should provide an understanding of microorganisms and their interaction with the human experience.

ONE SEMESTER

or

ONE QUARTER

ANATOMY+ Basic human anatomy.  This course can be either a gross anatomy course or a comparative anatomy course.

ONE QUARTER

GENERAL CHEMISTRY (INORGANIC)*
 
These courses should include dimensional analysis, atomic structure, the mole, stoichiometry, chemical reactions, electron configuration, periodicity, bonding, and molecular structure, acids and bases, redox reactions, gases, liquids, solids, solutions, colligative properties, thermochemistry, kinetics, and chemical equilibrium, solubility and ionic equilibria, qualitative analysis, electrochemistry, descriptive chemistry, coordination compounds, and nuclear chemistry.

BIOCHEMISTRY+ An introductory course in biochemistry dealing with the molecular basis of structure and metabolism of plants, animals, and microorganisms.

ONE SEMESTER

ORGANIC CHEMISTRY*
 
This sequence should contain topics such as, structure, nomenclature, physical properties, preparation, and reactions of hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers, carbohydrates, amino acids, nucleic acids, spectroscopic methods, polymers, and molecular orbital theory.

PHYSICS*
 
Topics in these courses should include mechanics and heat electricity, magnetism, and light.

FRESHMAN ENGLISH

AND

ONE ADVANCED COMPOSITION COURSE
 

FIRST COURSE

Practice in the fundamentals of expository writing, as illustrated in the student's own writing and in the essays of professional writers.

SECOND COURSE

Any course that extends and refines expository writing and analytic reading skills, with an emphasis on style and an introduction to documentation.  This can be any upper level writing course required for any major.

+These courses are entry requirements for the incoming class of 2006.  If you are applying for the incoming class of 2005 it is only required that you have one of these courses to fulfill your upper level biology requirement, however it is highly recommended that you take all three. 

*  Labs are required unless the lab course is taught separately.

  Courses in technical writing will fulfill the second English requirement.  Normally this course is taken as part of a major program requirement.
