Beginning in the fall of 2006, FYS Advisors were invited to participate directly in the final writing placement decisions for their deferred students (see Writing Placement for further discussion of the writing placement process). FYS Advisors work with first-year student writing firsthand, as well as working with new Wooster students on a full range of other issues; their input is essential to accurate writing placement, especially when other measures are inconclusive.

Specifically, FYS Advisors:

    1. Read the four examples included below. Each of these "Example FYS Essays" were read and rated by the Writing Advisory Board. Each essay is labeled with a holistic score ranging from 4 to 1 (4 being best). These scores correspond to the categories included in the FYS Advisor Deferred Placement Assessment form (below).

    2. Assess all deferred students' writing in relation to those examples.

    3. Make recommendations related to their deferred students' writing thus far in the semester (see "FYS Advisor Deferred Placement Assessment" form on this page).

These recommendations, along with standardized test scores, writing samples, and transcripts (where necessary), are the data used to make this final writing placement. FYS Advisors can also refer other students for consultation with the Writing Center through this process, even though those other students were not deferred.

Below you will find four essays, each an example of essays in one of four categories (four being best). You will also find below the FYS Advisor Deferred Placement Assessment form.
