Since the academic year 2006-2007, the psychology department has been working on a rubric for Senior Independent Study (I.S.) to help students better understand what faculty are looking for in I.S. theses. We are interested in distributing this rubric to students as a "roadmap" or self-assessment - it will soon be on the department website. As you are working on your I.S. projects, you can use this as a tool to see how you are progressing and see areas where you may strive to improve.

The psychology faculty will be using this rubric after reading I.S. projects this year for departmental analysis as a measure of variability, to see if there are areas of strength and weaknesses across student I.S. theses in order to inform our pedagogy and preparation of students for the I.S. process.

While students who do well in all areas of the rubric are more likely to receive higher marks, students should be aware the attached rubric does NOT currently have a one to one correspondence with I.S. grading. In other words, the rubric is NOT used to determine specifically what is "honors," "good," "satisfactory," or "unsatisfactory."

Please see your I.S. adviser if you have further questions or comments regarding the rubric.
