PROCEDURES FOR OBTAINING COLLEGE STUDENTS FROM INTRODUCTORY PSYCHOLOGY COURSES


All participation in psychological experiments is voluntary. The students in the introductory psychology classes usually obtain extra credit towards a grade for participating in the experiment.

1. Contact the instructor to obtain permission to use students in his or her class. An instructor is under no obligation to have his/her students act as subjects.

2. In a manila folder staple experimenter sign up forms (see sample below).

3. Fill in the Experimenter's Record side.

4. Contact the staff member teaching the course and ask that he/she circulate the folder.

5. Keep a record of the names and dates the subjects served. Also keep a record of any subjects who signed up but failed to keep the appointment. Turn these records in to the staff member before the end of the semester in which the data were collected.

COLLEGE OF WOOSTERPSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENTHUMAN RESEARCH ETHICAL REVIEW REQUIREMENTS

Attach a summary of the proposed research. Include ALL of the following:

1) RATIONAL, 2) RESEARCH PROCEDURES AFFECTING PARTICIPANTS, 3) ASSESSMENT OF ANY RISKS TO PARTICIPANTS, 4) COPIES OF ALL QUESTIONNAIRES, SURVEYS, DATA SHEETS ETC, 5) A COPY OF YOUR FORM FOR INFORMED CONSENT (as well as copies of recruitment materials, letters to parents, etc.), 6) METHOD OF PAYMENT TO SUBJECTS (including any course credit received for participation) and 7) A SUMMARY OF YOUR DEBRIEFING PROCEDURES.

If deception is to be used, justify its use in comparison to alternative methods in a section titled JUSTIFICATION OF DECEPTIVE PROCEDURES.

If any agency outside of the College of Wooster is involved in the research, attach a LETTER OF APPROVAL signed by the responsible administrator at the agency.
