Field Trips

In addition to regular classroom instruction, the program offers several weekend trips to local museums, theatres, parks, restaurants, etc. The trips to local Buddhist and Hindu temples are organized routinely. In conjunction with the Thai Studies program, Wooster-in-Thailand program is planning several major field trips in 2006.

SUKHOTHAI — An ancient city located in Northern Thailand, is famous for its temples and Buddhist monasteries. It provides access to traditional villages and archeological sites for the study of religion and culture.

TREK to the TRIBAL VILLAGES — Based on the model used in 2003 and accompanied by trained guides and counselors, students will spend time trekking in the hill country meeting with tribal people and camping in the hills as part of an orientation program.

THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE — A longer trip is being planned to take students to some ancient archeological sites in Northern Thailand in the vicinity of the city of Chiang Rai. Included in the trip is a visit to the famous golden triangle where the borders of Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand meet. Following the river MeKong that comes from China, the students are introduced to various cultures.

AYUTHIA AND BANGKOK — An ancient Buddhist city, Ayuthia (named after the Indian city of Ayodhya) is one of the most outstanding archeological sites of Thailand. Located close to Bangkok, it offers students an excellent opportunity to explore the ancient and modern Thailand. An extended visit to Bangkok is included in this trip.

The program offers a fall break of a few days when students can travel to different parts of Thailand and enjoy outdoor activities. The academic program formally ends around December 10. The students are free to travel within Thailand or elsewhere in Asia before returning home.
