Where I.S. Can Lead

Your completed I.S. gives employers tangible proof of your resourcefulness, creativity, and communication skills.

“I.S. helped me land my dream job,” says Rahim Bhayani (2001), a senior consultant with Ernst & Young LLP. “You’re up against all these people from Harvard, Cornell, these Ivy League schools, and — surprisingly — not a lot of them have done this kind of research.”

I.S. also marks you as an independent scholar, ready to take on graduate-level research wherever your interests lead: one reason Wooster ranks 18th among all liberal arts colleges for the number of graduates who have gone on to earn a Ph.D. in the past 40 years.

Just ask Phil Verhoef (1997), who completed a dual M.D./Ph.D. program at Case Western Reserve University, before accepting a residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at UCLA Medical Center. “I.S. teaches you how to attack a problem, search the literature, and distill what you need from the vast amount of information out there,” he says. “I was very well prepared by the I.S. experience.”

When told the person he had come to see was out, Danny George slid a copy of his Independent Study under the door. It was just the first of many doors that his Independent Study would open for him.
