Fire Safety
Your
life may depend on it!
-If you
discover a fire or smell smoke, sound the nearest fire alarm. Know the
location of the alarm signal-stations and how they operate.
-In the
event that you are in a building that does not contain a fire alarm
system, evacuate the building and call 911 to notify the Wooster
Fire Department or use an emergency phone to contact the Safety
& Security Office (ext. 2590).
-The
Dispatcher at the Safety & Security Office will notify the
Fire Department when an alarm is transmitted.
-When the
fire alarm sounds, leave at once. Close doors behind you. Proceed to
the nearest stairwell and evacuate the building.
-DO NOT USE
ELEVATORS! Elevator shafts are like chimneys. Smoke could enter the
elevator shaft and asphyxiate the occupants trying to evacuate the
building.
-If the
door feels cool, open cautiously. Be braced to slam door shut if hall
is full of smoke or you feel heat pressure against the door. If hall is
clear, proceed to stairwell.
-Feel the
door that leads from your room/apartment/office to the corridor before
you open it. If it is hot or smoke is seeping in do not open it. If you
become trapped and cannot reach the stairwell, keep the door closed and
stuff wet towels or clothing in any crack to keep smoke out. If
possible, use a phone to call the Security Office (ext.2590), and give
the name of the building you are in and the room/apartment/office
number.
-The
Security Office maintains a list of the location of all disabled
individuals. If you are or become disabled (even temporarily), make
sure your name and room/office location are included on this list.
-Anyone who
is found to have caused a fire (no matter how small) maliciously or
recklessly or who tampers with fire fighting/life protection equipment,
or initiates a false alarm, or fails to comply promptly with requests
from College employees or the Fire Department; is toying with the lives
of other people. Such behavior cannot be tolerated and violators will
face judicial and/or criminal prosecution.
-Failure to
adhere to Fire Safety Procedures is likely to result in disciplinary
action.
