Teaching Experience

I have 13 years of college teaching experience in colleges and universities in southern California and Nevada, to include Santa Barbara City College, Moorpark College, University of Laverne, Ventura College and Community College of Southern Nevada. The range of my teaching covers all fields of anthropology, physical/biological anthropology, cultural anthropology (Introduction to Cultural Anthropology, Witchcraft, Magic and Religion and Sport and Culture) archaeology and prehistory. I also have experience in online/distance education teaching.

Applied Anthropology and Environmental Experience

I have extensive experience in applied anthropology, especially working in roles with federal, state and local agencies and governments. In 1993, I worked as an archaeologist in a fulltime position for Los Padres National Forest doing excavation, survey, ethnohistory and coordinating a 100-person-strong site steward program to help monitor Forest cultural resources, such as rock art.

For two years, 2000 to 2002, I was the cultural resources manager for the on Base environmental contractor at Edwards AFB. During this period, I managed ten archaeologists, a budget of over one million dollars per year, authored management plans, supervised surveys and excavations, provided support for the development of management plans for the 300,000-acre Base and gave presentations to the State Historical Preservation Office (SHPO) on cultural resource policy at Edwards AFB.

From 2002 to 2007, I managed the environmental program at Edwards AFB, California, for CH2M HILL, a top international and national environmental company. Edwards AFB is the premier flight test and research and development center in the Air Force. The environmental program spans the range of environmental protocols, to include natural and cultural resources, environmental planning, compliance, restoration, geographical information systems and community relations. My responsibilities included managing 80 professional and administrative staff, administering a budget of 120 million dollars over the life of a 15-year contract, authoring and coordinating management and strategic plans, and writing and overseeing technical and programmatic proposals and statements of work (SOW) to fulfill the terms of the contract. I was directly responsible for planning, implementing, and maintaining the yearly budget, which like our work, is subject to emergency reallocation. Included in managing the environmental mission was the development of new and/or experimental projects and their proposals that compete with other DoD organizations for funding. In both the cultural resources position and this position, I and my organization responded to at times competing stakeholders, SHPO, Native American groups, United States Fish and Wildlife (USFW), Cal Fish and Game, private advocacy groups, such as Center for Biological Diversity in dealing with environmental concerns. As an anthropologist I was directly involved in interpreting policy as well as aiding policy consensus among stakeholders.

I have co-authored, along with the Army Corps of Engineers, the Edwards AFB Integrated Cultural Resources Management Plan (ICRMP) and I managed, provided senior review and wrote sections for the Base's cultural resources management plans, Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan (INRMP) and supported the first ever DoD comprehensive EA on directed energy.
