I have two major research avenues; the first is anthropology of sport, including ethnographic theory.
I have over 20 years of experience doing ethnographic fieldwork with culturally diverse groups, including American and international athletes. This fieldwork has led to five books and an array of papers and presentations and public lectures as well as interviews on radio, television and in the print media.
Over the last five years, I have been involved in extensive ethnography and cultural research on surfing culture, which has included trips to Hawaii and other locations, and library and cultural research in institutions like the Bishop Museum in Honolulu.
Recently, I completed a chapter on ethical ethnography, entitled "Ethical Ethnography: Epistemology and the Ethics of Good Intentions." for the upcoming volume, Tribal Play: Sport Subcultures and Countercultures, edited by Kevin Young, Volume IV of Research in the Sociology of Sport, Elsevier Press (in press, 2007). I am currently at work developing an anthropology of sport and culture text.
