What is New Student Orientation?

New Student Orientation is a mandatory session geared towards first-year and transfer students.  Orientation essentially picks up where ARCH left off. This is the time when students will learn about campus resources and programming, become more acclimated with the campus, and gain a greater understanding of the core values and workings of The College of Wooster. Activities include lectures, discussion sessions, community service projects, and evening wind down activities like Woo Glo!

Are There Programs for International Students?

Yes. There is an International Student Orientation prior to the New Student Orientation called Woo @ First Glance. This takes place Thursday, August 14 and Friday, August 15. This program is for international students and U.S. students living abroad to ease their transition to living and studying in the U.S. These students will receive additional information from the Office of International Student Affairs.

How Much Will New Student Orientation Cost?

There are no additional fees associated with New Student Orientation.

When is New Student Orientation?  When do I Move in?

The majority of New Student Orientation programs will take place Monday and Tuesday, August 18 - 19. You are expected to arrive on campus and move into your residence hall between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 17. 

Do Parents Attend?

Parents are invited to attend and participate on the first day of Orientation. The parents' sessions will end at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, August 18.

What if I Can't Attend?

We recognize that circumstances may arise that prevent a student from attending New Student Orientation and we will address these issues on an individual basis. Please contact us if this is the case.


When Will I Find Out About my Room and Roommate Situation?

You should find out about your roommate and room by the end of July.

Do I Have to Stay on Campus?

Yes, you will be required to stay on campus for the duration of Orientation and the academic year. On Sunday evening, August 17, you will be able to move directly into your assigned room where you will meet your roommate, hall mates, and Resident Assistant (RA).

What do I Need to Bring?

As you will be moving into your room the night before Orientation begins, bring everything you will need for the upcoming school year. For a further list of suggested items, visit Residence Life. If you happen to forget anything, there will be student shuttles during Orientation to the north end of Wooster to pick up anything that you may need!

Is There Transportation from the Airport for New Student Orientation?

If you are a student traveling alone, The College of Wooster will provide transportation from Cleveland International Airport and the Akron-Canton Airport at specified times. The College of Wooster Shuttle will leave the airports at 5:00 p.m., Sunday, August 17. You MUST contact us by Friday, August 8 to reserve a space on the shuttle.

What if my Flight is Delayed?

Occasionally flights are delayed due to weather, etc. If you are utilizing The College of Wooster Shuttle and your flight arrives after the shuttle has left to return to Wooster, it is your responsibility to obtain transportation to the College. Options include renting a car or taking a cab. You will receive appropriate emergency information when you reserve your space on The College of Wooster Shuttle by contacting us.

May I Bring a Car to Campus?

Parking is available for students on campus with the purchase of a parking permit. Wooster offers parking to students on a first-come, first-serve basis depending on the academic year. Please visit Security and Protective Services for more information.

I Don't Have a Car, How Else Can I Get Around Wooster?

Not only does Wooster have a bike program, but we also have a rental car program, "Hertz on Demand" which is run by Security and Protective Services. Please contact them for more information about these programs.

There is also the Wooster Hospitality Transit System, which is a dedicated transportation service for Wooster and surrounding areas. This transportation system maintains daily routes to various locations throughout Wooster. College of Wooster students ride locally for free with a College I.D.

General Living on Campus

Where can I Pick up my Mail and any Packages I will Receive?

The College has a postal contract station located in Lowry Center, so you will be able to send and receive letters and packages on campus. United Postal Service (UPS) deliveries are also received by the College’s postal contract station. You will receive a campus mailbox number during the summer. Mail should be addressed in the following format during the semester:

We recommend that you bring most important items with you. Items that cannot be brought may be shipped by UPS or other courier service. There is limited storage space on campus, so please plan for packages to arrive no more than one week prior to Orientation.

Packages will not be delivered to residence halls or houses.

The Service Building will be open and staffed for your convenience during Move-In on Sunday, August 17 between 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. It is located directly behind the Culbertson/Slater Complex, 602 E. Wayne Avenue.

What are my Meal Options for the Next Year at The College of Wooster?

You will be able to choose between three different meal plans according to your individual preference.  In order to choose what meal plan you desire, you will need to visit Campus Dining Services on the lower level of Lowry Center and select which plan is right for you within the first week of classes.  All students in campus housing are required to purchase a meal plan.  For the complete list of meal plans, visit Campus Dining Services.

What Banks are Available in Wooster?

There are several banks available in Wooster at which you will be able to open an account if you wish.  The list includes, but is not limited to:

  • Chase
  • Directions Credit Union
  • FirstMerit Bank
  • First National Bank
  • PNC Bank
  • Wayne County Community Federal Credit Union
  • Wayne Savings Community Bank.

Several banks will be on campus during New Student Orientation Check-In, Monday, August 17, and you may open up an account at that time.  You will find temporary banks located on the upper level of Lowry Center, just off the main dining hall.

FirstMerit Bank and PNC Bank have an ATM on campus, however all banks are within walking or short driving distance from campus.

When do Classes Start?

Classes will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 20.

When Will I be Able to Change my Classes and/or Know About Updates Made to my Schedule?

The first opportunity you will have to make adjustments to your schedule is during Orientation. Time has been set aside on Tuesday, August 19 for you to meet with your academic adviser to discuss any changes that you would like to make. Later in the day you will have an opportunity to go on-line and complete the add/drop process. Your academic adviser will share additional information with you as well. You will find additional information in the Orientation brochure.

Students are permitted to add courses, without penalty, until the end of the second week of classes (Tuesday, September 2) and to drop courses without record of registration through the end of the sixth week of classes (Tuesday, September 30).


When is Family Weekend?

Family Weekend at The College of Wooster takes place October 31-November 2, 2014.
