A Virtual Private Network, or VPN, is a encrypted tunnel from a computer, through the internet, to the intranet on campus. The use of a VPN connection is to allow access to on campus resources and services securely while traveling or at home.
Users connected through the VPN will be able to use all campus and library resources as if they were on campus. VPN provides several of these restricted access services with proof that you are a part of the Wooster community.
VPN is intended to provide access to on campus resources from off campus. To that end, users cannot access VPN from on campus. In addition, you should disconnect from VPN as soon as you have finished accessing the information you need.
Documentation:Server space is available to all members of the campus community through Novell. This space is accessible through the use of a Novell client, or through Native File Access (NFA). Each student at the College is allocated 100 megabytes of server space, which is accessible from any computer on campus. This space is intended for students to back-up important academic content and to store frequently used files.
Faculty and staff members are allocated 5 gigabytes of server space to store and back-up important files. Computers allocated to College employees that have Windows XP are configured to login to Novell when logging into the computer itself.
All Macintosh users on campus connect to the Novell resources through NFA. Windows users have the choice of connecting to Novell by downloading the Novell client, found on our technology software downloads page, or through NFA.
The College of Wooster has contracted with MT Business Technologies, Inc. to provide Ricoh copiers on campus. These copiers bring a number of new services to our repertoire aswell as provide the opportunity to bring together the management of printing and copying functions.
These copy machines are digital, networked copier/printers that will handle paper up to and including 11x17 in all locations. By creating a document at your desk and printing to the copier using all the functions of a copier, you can now save time by just picking up your jobs rather than waiting at the copy machine. If you print to one of the four public printers (located in Andrews Library, Timken Science Library, Taylor 205, and the Wired Scot), you can also secure the job and release it when you get to the copy machine several hours after you have completed your work. Another bonus of networking the copiers is the ability to electronically send your job to any device on campus.
Copiers and printers are maintained through User Services as a one-stop shop for all your computer, printer and copier needs. If you have a problem, contact the department at x4524 between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm.
Documentation:The College's wireless network, ScotZone, is a secure network using industry standard authentication and encryption. Wireless internet access is currently available in the following locations:
- All academic buildings
- Douglas Quad
- Lowry Center
- Galpin Hall
- Luce Hall
Luce is currently the only residence hall with wireless service. IT has committed to extending wireless network access to Armington, Holden and Stevenson Halls over the upcoming summer. Service will be extended to additional residence halls as quickly as is feasible. Because ScotZone is a secure wireless network, some setup is required. For assistance with this setup follow the link in the table of contents.
Wireless networking allows users' computers to connect to the campus network without the use of a network cable. In order to connect to the wireless network, the computer must be equipped with a wireless network adapter. Also, there must be a College maintained wireless access point within range of the computer.
At this time, the Office of Information Technology does not support the following operating systems on our network: Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Media Center, Macintosh OS 9, and Macintosh OS 10.5.
Documentation:Mathematica is a computer program used widely in scientific, engineering and mathematical fields. It is mainly known as a computer algebra system, but it has various other features for technical computing. It was originally conceived by Stephen Wolfram and developed by a team of mathematicians and programmers that he assembled and led. It is developed by Wolfram Research of Champaign, Illinois.

The Novell Client workstation software extends the capabilities of Linux and Windows desktops by providing access to NetWare and Open Enterprise Server (OES). Once installed on workstations, Novell Clients enable users to enjoy the full range of Novell services such as authentication via Novell eDirectory, network browsing and service resolution, and secure and reliable file system access—all delivered through industry-standard protocols. The Client supports Novell's traditional NCP protocol
