Economical Printing Procedures Reduce Waste and Save Money

In previous years, the college recycled more than 50,000 sheets of paper printed from public printers on campus. That is almost a half million sheets per year, at a cost of six to eight cents a piece. In order to reduce waste, conserve resources and save money, the college has installed new, more cost-effective printing devices and capped the volume of free printing available.

The College leases Ricoh multi-function devices that provide both high-speed copying and laser-quality printing at a significantly lower cost per page than laser printers. All of these machines are linked to the campus network and 10 of the devices — in Andrews Library, Timken Science Library, Taylor Hall, Office Services and The Wired Scot — are available for student printing. Students can log into their Novell space from anywhere on campus, create or edit a document, and send it to one of these public copiers. The document will not actually print until the student goes to the copier location and swipes a college ID to release the print job.

Each first-year and sophomore student will be given a printing account of $60.00 per semester, the equivalent of 1,200 pages. Juniors will receive $75.00 (1,500 pages) and seniors will receive a $100.00 (2,000 pages) per semester. Once their account limit is exceeded, students will be charged 5 cents per printed page. More money may be added to printing accounts at the Financial Services counter at the Wilson Bookstore.

Managing printing in this way reduces waste, controls costs, and allows the college to make additional services available during the course of the year, including more color printing sources and the large-format poster printer housed in Taylor Hall. These copiers also allow Office Services to offer expanded services, including multiple originals per sheet, 11 x 17 booklets, center-stapled booklets, and faster turn-around time.
