Over the length of the course, seven teams produced episodes of a continuing soap opera, Security 2590. Here are assignment materials:
The Producers Speak
- Security 2590
- Each episode must be linked to the next by one or more of the following methods:
- Continuing actors "hired" from the Theater Department. (Be careful; theater people are often heavily committed.)
- Costume: A character could be identified by a blond wig. Then, anyone who wore that wig would "be" that character. Or it could be a hat — or a large trench coat with a name tag.
- Chorus: there could be a masked chorus (which could be one person) that would always wear the same mask(s) but whose body(ies) could change from episode to episode.
- while a place or a room or a prop would establish continuity (many officers in one office, but not all at the same time), at least one character from the next episode would appear at some point in each episode. Naturally, characters from previous episodes could always appear in following episodes. And lots of characters could appear in the last episode.
- No mean-spirited humor (see 4 and 6 below). Balanced: students and faculty are just as good targets as are security officers.
- Use real stories, from students and from security workers.
- The core arc should have something serious at stake (to be decided). Not guns.
- Talk to security about this project.
