Becoming
a WCWS DJ is fairly simple. First, you must register and take the Radio
Workshop course (COMM
130), which is offered both in fall and spring semesters. The class
will teach you the basics of how WCWS and other stations operate, our
rules and regulations, and other facts necessary to be a successful
DJ. While you take the course, you will also be required to broadcast
news once a week and "apprentice" with another WCWS DJ. By apprenticing,
we mean that you must go in during that DJ's show. S/he will teach you
how to operate the equipment in the studio and will most likely give
you a little air time for practice. You can then take the practicum
test, where we make sure that you know how to run the station properly.
At the end of the semester, you can then fill out the DJ application,
and based on seniority/experience, availability, and other factors you
will get a show the following semester.
If you
are a DJ already and/or are interested in other aspects of the station,
you can assist one of the Line Staff or Management members as listed
on the staff page. For example, if you assist the Music Director,
you can help the station acquire new CDs and records by contacting
labels. Or if you were to assist the Production Director, you could
help create new "carts" (announcements on minidiscs and 8-track tapes)
that the station broadcasts regularly. Simple contact the person in
the department you wish to assist in, and s/he'll take it from there.
