How to Access/Upload Web Files

There are two ways you can access the Wooster Web server:

  1. Using Novell
  2. Using FTP

1) Using Novell:

Follow the directions below. (Note: You CANNOT access the new Web server using Native File Access. If you do not have Novell on your computer, you will need to use FTP, which will be explained below).

  1. Make sure you have Novell installed on your machine and you know your password.
  2. Log-in to Novell
  3. Browse the Novell tree (open WOONET, then Wooster)
  4. Search until you find "WEBSERV2_VOL1"
  5. You will then need to open a folder called "Apache2", then another folder called "htdocs"
  6. Once inside "htdocs" you should see the folder(s) that you have access to

On a Windows machine, follow these steps to access your Web folder(s):

  1. Double-click the "My Network Places" icon on the desktop.
  2. Double-click the "Novell Connections" icon.
  3. Double-click the "Webserv2" icon.
  4. Double-click the "VOL1" icon.
  5. Double-click the "Apache2" folder.
  6. Double-click the "htdocs" folder.

You should now see the folders for which you have access.

To upload your files to the server, just drag your files from your computer into your Web folder on the server. It is the same as if you were to drag your files from one computer to another, or from one folder to another on your own computer. If you upload a file with the same name that already exists on the Web server, you will be asked if you want to replace it. If so, then say yes.

2) Using FTP

The new Web server enables users to use FTP.

There are a number of FTP programs that people may use, but here are two recommended programs:

  1. For Mac users, a free FTP client called Cyberduck is available
  2. For PC users, a free FTP client called Filezilla is available

More information on these two clients can be found towards the bottom of this page.

FTP can be used from off-campus, but only by utilizing the Wooster VPN. See the IT Documentation Web site for more information on VPN.

Users of Standard FTP

If you are using an FTP program, here is all the information that you need to enter:

Host: webftp.wooster.edu
Username: Novell username.Novell context (i.e. jdoe.publications) (students: jdoe09.2009.students)
Password: Novell password

(If you are trying to access your personal page, use "ftphome.wooster.edu" as your host)

Users of Macromedia Dreamweaver

If you use Macromedia Dreamweaver and you wish to use the built-in ability of the program to upload your Web files, you can continue to do so. See the following documentation on how you can use both FTP and Local Area Network (LAN) or Local/Remote access through Dreamweaver

» Using FTP in Dreamweaver
» Using LAN or Local/Remote access in Dreamweaver

Filezilla

For PC users, Filezilla is an excellent option. You can download the software for free from the following site:
