The People of Westminster

The Rev. Carroll C. Meyer, pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church since 1995, is a native Ohioan, with roots on a farm near Steubenville. He raises apples and bees in Shreve, where he lives with his wife, Jimmy Wilkinson Meyer. He loves music, gardening, and good pie. He dreams of restoring the church that his father’s family attended in Harbke, Germany.

Carroll served churches in Caldwell and Minerva, Ohio, before leaving the pastoral ministry for three years to promote the Presbyterian Major Mission Fund in the Midwest. He then followed a call to Historic First Presbyterian Church of East Cleveland, Ohio. During his 15 years at Historic First, Carroll helped the congregation become more diverse in its music, membership, and leadership.

Carroll feels that each congregation teaches him new skills and opens new avenues for ministry. His sermons bring historic Protestant beliefs and scripture to bear on matters of public policy.

Carroll participates in presbytery and synod and was once the chaplain for the Presbyterian House at Chautauqua Institution. Other activities have included service on a state commission, a library board, and a local foundation, and playing the tuba in a community band. Carroll holds a master’s of divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary and a doctor of ministry degree from McCormick Theological Seminary. He and Jimmy are the parents of Bryant Clifford and Malcolm Todd Meyer.

Stephen H. Leslie
Organist & Director of Music

Stephen Leslie, appointed in 2002 as Westminster’s Organist and Director of Music, brings to the congregation a rich combination of talent, personality and clear direction for his music ministry.

A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Stephen began piano studies at the
age of eight and at 14 was playing the organ for church worship.
He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Tennessee and completed the International Master Class in Organ with Flor Peeters in Mechlin, Belgium at St. Rombouts Cathedral.

His professional life has centered on pipe organs.  He worked eight years at Schantz Organ Company in Orrville, then worked for and became co-owner of Robert C. Newton Pipe Organ Services in San Jose, CA.  In 1998, at the request of Schantz, he returned to the Voicing and Finishing staff of that company.

Stephen has served churches as organist and music director in Alabama, California and Ohio. In addition to his talents as an organist, Stephen is a talented bass, singing in college, community, and men’s and boy’s choirs; he remembers fondly singing with Robert M. Quaid in Akron at St. Paul’s Church.

He also is providing leadership to diversify the church’s choral and instrumental music offerings and has a straightforward message to all church members: “If you can sing, come join us!”

Beyond his work for Westminster and Schantz, Stephen loves old movie palaces and restoring their organs.  His most recent restoration was in the Regent Theatre in Melbourne, Australia.

Stephen also spends time with his hobby of model railroading (particularly the Great Northern Railway and its James J. Hill lines). He’s building a model railroad layout in his basement.
