Biochemists and molecular biologists ask how the molecules found in biological systems function to confer the properties of living organisms. The disciplines of biochemistry and molecular biology form the two sides of the boundary between the classical disciplines of biology and chemistry.

Chemists and biologists draw inspiration from each other as scientists at this boundary and learn more about how biological molecules react and interact to convert energy, build complex structures, maintain order, catalyze reactions, and convey information spatially and temporally.
Some students have considered a degree in BCMB to be a stepping stone toward careers in the medical, dental and veterinary fields.
