FAQ's

Am I required to audition in order to register for music classes?

No. However, auditions are required for several of our large ensembles (Wooster Chorus, Wooster Symphony Orchestra, Wooster Jazz Ensemble, and Scot Symphonic Band) or if you wish to pursue a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Performance, Music Theory/Composition, Music Education in Public School Teaching, or Music Therapy. In addition, several performance-based courses require permission of the instructor. In those cases, you can contact the instructor via email to set up an initial meeting.

When are auditions held for the large ensembles?

Audition dates and sign-up sheets will be posted in Scheide Music Center for Wooster Chorus, Wooster Symphony Orchestra, and Wooster Jazz Ensemble at the beginning of fall semester each year. Auditions for the Scot Symphonic Band occur in late October (just after fall break). Again, sign-up sheets will be posted in Scheide Music Center for these auditions.

What is required for me to declare a music major?

You should talk to your applied music teacher about this so they can set up an audition into the major you wish to pursue. These auditions typically happen at the end of a semester in conjunction with the “regular” jury you perform for the music instructors in your area. Your audition will consist of approximately 20 minutes of performance for your applied teacher and one or two full-time faculty members. Students wishing to major in Composition will undergo a portfolio review rather than a performance jury. (Please be aware there is no audition required for the BA in Music.) Once you have passed your audition into the music major, you will be assigned a music faculty adviser (if you don’t already have an adviser in the music department). They will assist you in meeting the requirements for your music major.

What is the cost for private (one-on-one) applied music lessons?

Every student who takes applied music lessons pays $645 per semester per instrument (in addition to their tuition) for weekly half-hour lessons. Weekly one-hour lessons cost $1290 per semester. If you hold a music scholarship or are a declared music major, you are only billed $25 per semester on your primary instrument for weekly half-hour lessons.

What are the rehearsal schedules for the various large music ensembles?

Wooster Chorus holds rehearsals every Tuesday through Friday, 4:15-5:30 pm. Wooster Symphony Orchestra rehearses every Monday from 4-5:30 pm (strings only) and from 7-9:30 pm (full orchestra). Wooster Jazz Ensemble rehearsals are held every Tuesday from 7-8:30 pm and every Thursday from 7-8 pm. Scot Marching Band rehearses every Tuesday and Thursday from 4-6 pm (fall semester only), while the Scot Symphonic Band rehearses every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 4:10-5:30 pm.

Who teaches the instrument I wish to play at Wooster?
