Weeklong Celebration to Showcase Contemporary Africa

Africa Week scheduled for Feb. 9-15 at The College of Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio — The College of Wooster’s African Students Union will present “Contemporary Africa: The Unseen Parts of Our Continent,” Feb. 9 -15, at various locations across campus. The weeklong celebration features a range of events, all of which are free and open to the public.

“We are looking forward to sharing our culture and celebrating our heritage,” said Weyni Berhe of the African Students Union. “We would like to invite everyone at the College and in the community to take part in our activities.”

The festivities begin with a performance by award-winning Botswanian actor Donald Molosi on Saturday (Feb 9) in Gault Recital Hall of Scheide Music Center (525 E. University Street) beginning at 6 p.m.

The next event will be on Monday (Feb. 11) when Zimbabwean wire-sculpture artist Clyde Bango demonstrates his craft in the lobby of Gault Library (1140 Beall Ave.) at 5:30 p.m. He will also exhibit samples of his work all week at the library.

On Tuesday (Feb. 12), a panel discussion about contemporary Africa will take place in Lean Lecture Room of Wishart Hall (303 E. University St.), beginning at 6:30 p.m.

On Wednesday (Feb. 13), there will be banquet, hosted by the African Students Union and catered by Drelys Restaurant, a West African restaurant in Cleveland, at 5 p.m. in Babcock Dining Hall (1315 Beall Ave.). No tickets are required; however there will be a sign-up sheet at the front desk of Lowry Center.

The festivities conclude on Friday (Feb. 15) with a performance by Jabali African Acrobats in McGaw Chapel (340 E. University St.) at 7 p.m., followed by a dance party for students at the UG featuring DJ Zaga from Ghana.

Africa Week is sponsored by the African Students Union with support from the President’s Office, the Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDGE), and the Africana Studies department.
