March 6, 2013 by John Finn

WOOSTER, Ohio — The Wooster Chorus, an ensemble of 50 student singers from The College of Wooster, will present a free public concert on Friday (March 8) at Wooster United Methodist Church (243 N. Market St.) beginning at 7 p.m. The performance, which is sponsored by the church’s “Music on Market” series, kicks off the group’s 49th annual spring tour.

Directed by Lisa Wong, the chorus will present the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, Maurice Duruflé, Samuel Barber, Eric Whitacre, and others in a program that explores the foundations of human existence. “Our capacities for love, our perceptions of deep beauty, and our sensitivity to an expansive range of emotions are among the wealth of traits that define our humanity,” says Wong. “In this performance, we survey a multi-dimensional journey, from the basal toward self-transcendence.”

The Wooster Chorus was founded in 1964 and consists of students representing all academic areas within The College of Wooster’s liberal arts curriculum. The choir has been praised for its high level of artistry, engaging performances, and enthusiastic singing. Within the past year, the chorus has been invited to perform with The Ashland Symphony, The Canton Symphony, and The Cleveland Orchestra and Cleveland Orchestra Chorus.

Wong is in her fourth year on the faculty at Wooster, where she also conducts the Wooster Singers and teaches courses in conducting and music education. In addition to her duties at Wooster, she is the assistant director of choruses for the Cleveland Orchestra. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in music education from West Chester University, and Master-of Music and Doctor of Music degrees in choral conducting from Indiana University.

There is no admission charge for the performance, but a freewill offering will be taken. For additional information or to reserve complimentary tickets, call the church office at 330-262-5641.
