Fiske Guide Features, Offers Plaudits to Wooster Once Again

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster “is nationally recognized for its commitment to mentored research and its international focus” and its “distinctive Independent Study requirement actively shapes both the individual student experience and the campus atmosphere,” says “Fiske Guide to Colleges” in the 2019 edition of the highly-respected guidebook, released this week.
The Fiske Guide, now in its 35th year, is considered one of the most authoritative sources of information for college-bound students and their parents, as it delivers an insider’s view at 300 of the “best and most interesting” schools in the U.S., Canada, Great Britain, and Ireland.

In addition to confirming institutional strengths of mentored researchinternational focus, and I.S., this year’s listing praises Wooster for an ability to “turn above-average students into real scholars.” In the opening passage it is written, “Instead of teaching students what to think, Wooster focuses on teaching students how to do it. From the first freshman seminar to the final day when seniors hand in their theses, the college paves each student’s path to independence.”
The guide includes an overview of the architecture, student body, campus climate, financial aid, housing, social life, traditions, the athletic program, and the surrounding community of each institution, but what separates Fiske from many other college guides is it includes comments from current students. One first-hand account noted that “Wooster is a school that really celebrates hard work, and one that encourages students to find opportunities that interest them,” another offered “the research skills you develop are second to none,” while another described the students as “eclectic, spirited, and incredibly down-to-earth.”
Edward B. Fiske served for 17 years as education editor of the New York Times, where he realized that college-bound students and their families needed better information on which to base their educational choices. He wrote the “Fiske Guide to Colleges” to help them, updated annually with the Fiske editorial team.
