Select Service Programs

Before joining a service corps there are questions to ask of yourself and the program.

AmeriCorps has three different types of service commitments:

  • AmeriCorps State and National: Direct service, in nonprofits, schools and government agencies. Length of Service: 1700 hours or approximately one year
  • AmeriCorps VISTA:Indirect service in nonprofits, schools, and government agencies. Emphasis on policy issues, ending poverty and capacity building. Length of Service: one year
  • AmeriCorps NCCC: Residential, team-based, travel to sites throughout the region. Direct service. Length of Service: 10 months

Avodah Provides young adults ages 21-26 with hands-on work experience at local antipoverty organizations in Chicago, New Orleans, New York, and Washington, DC. Length of service: one year – AmeriCorps Education Award

The Blueprint Fellows Program - a year-long full-time academic tutoring program for recent graduates in urban schools across the country. Partner schools are currently located in Denver, Colorado; Saint Louis, Missouri; and greater Boston, Massachusetts. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but check for current programs by late fall.

Citizen Schools- The Citizen Schools National Teaching Fellowship is a service program offering a two-year leadership development experience. Applications are typically due at the beginning of November.

Catholic Network of Volunteer Service Programs are available in all fifty states and over 100 countries. Length of Service: Varies depending on programs

City Year involves direct service in nonprofits, schools, and government agencies. Emphasis on youth and also physical service. Length of Service: 1700 hours in 10 months - AmeriCorps Education Award

Conservancy of Cuyahoga Valley National Park Field Instructor interns serve in the resident environmental education program at the Environmental Education Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Length of Service: 10 months

Environment America – a two-year Fellowship Program coupled with targeted programs in individual states are designed to develop policy expertise and lobbying skills on energy issues. Internships are also available if you are seeking a shorter term experience.

Humanity in Action (HIA) HIA fellowships are designed to promote and facilitate an ongoing international dialogue about the challenges that democratic countries face as they become more diverse societies. Summer Fellowships are available to current students and recent graduates. Applications due early January.

IMPACT America provides an opportunity for recent graduates to engage with communities of need in a meaningful way, broadening their perspectives and making a real impact in their communities. Length of service: 1 year

International Service for Human Rights (ISHR) ISHR recruits all year long for a wide range of opportunities for students and recent graduates in both Geneva and New York. This is an unpaid 3-6 month opportunity. ISHR can help with some visa fees.

Jesuit Volunteer Corps are committed to community, social justice, simple living, and Christian spirituality. Programs are in all 50 states and six countries: Length of Service: one year

Lutheran Volunteer Corps is a national volunteer service program. It is for people who want to explore their spirituality while working for social justice, living in intentional community with other volunteers, and practicing sustainability in all aspects of their lives. Length of Service: one year

Mercy Home is a children's catholic charity in Chicago, IL. Length of Service: one year

Mercy Volunteer Corps Promotes social change by placing and supporting volunteers with people who are poor or marginalized in the United States and South America. Length of service: one year – AmeriCorps Education Award

PC (USA) Young Adult Volunteers in communities of need in the United States and around the world. Length of Service: one year

Peace Corps focuses on education, community development, business development, environment, agriculture, health, HIV/AIDS, technology. Length of Service: 24-27 months

PULSE Pittsburgh Graduates are partnered with Pittsburgh nonprofits to develop the next generation of servant leaders in the city of Pittsburgh. Serve with a nonprofit – Live in community – Grow as a leader  Length of Service: one year.

Teach for America has a focus on education, specifically “eliminating education inequity.” Length of Service: Two years
